Swollen joints occur when there's a surge of fluid that collects in the tissues of the joints of the foot. This is actually your body’s response to joint injuries in order to increase the amount of blood that travels to the injured area. This produces swelling, stiffness, soreness, warmth and discomfort in the foot’s joints. Inflammation of the ankle on a single side is often a result of sprains, arthritis, pregnancy, obesity, heart disease and kidney or liver conditions. Moreover, joint swelling can also happen when there is a significant trauma that has impacted your feet or if there is crystal buildup in the joint. Symptoms of swollen joints can also include an aching pain or a significant hindering of mobility that may even require lifestyle changes.
Treatment for this condition involves:
- Use anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation around the joints.
- Steroid medicines can help whether they are taken orally or injected. When injected, they can help to attack the chemicals that produce an inflammatory response in the body and give quick relief from your foot pain. This type of procedure is generally accompanied by the removal of fluid from the joints to allow for normal movement and easier healing capabilities.
- The use of antibiotics may be required to eliminate any infection at the source of your joint inflammation. If this cannot be done easily, surgical procedures may be required to proceed with drainage of any infected matter.
